Trying to find a cheap hotel w/ vacancy was impossible due to Race weekend. We ended up paying double what I wanted but I didn't care I just wanted to stop driving and get some rest before the show. The Asian group from NY opened again. I shot pool with David and some others before they went on. I brought my camera to this show, got some great pics. During the show David took my camera and made some art with the press of his thumb.
In the very beginning, I believe they opened up with Now Then . I don't know what happened but everyone was off. Sims and Duane looked at each other and worked it out. No ones perfect. Only a couple handfuls were moving for the Lizard. I think a lot of this southern crowd were virgin JL players. My favorite part of the show was the encore when everyone was yelling for the usual Mouthbreather, Monkey Trick, Lady Shoes, Zachariah when I heard a quiet pause I yelled Postcortal Glow a song off Blue. I never yelled for this song before and haven't heard it thus far on the tour. A spooky call by Crosby! Yow pulled up a chair from a black bouncer and sat in front of the stage to sing this song. I proceeded to the very front and center to sing along. After this I think they played Fly on the Wall, David caught a glimpse of my motion to the song specifically when he said 'monster' He caught me in my monster pose, it made him crack a smile. Again only a single encore but a great fucking show. Afterward my friend and I shot pool with Davey the drummer of SPE and got some time to talk to Duane about email, the man loves that shit.

i went to 5-22-98 in north carolina. hung out and shot pool with yow. i had met him before, at 11-2-97, 11-5-97, 12-31-97. i was up front during the show and he grabbed my head and said.."i remember you now, you look like jello biafra when your yelling." i felt a queen that nite. whatever. 5-22-98 in nc was really good. they kicked ass on the euclayptus. i lefta couple of my lists on the bar, but no one responded fer a trade. oh well.

It never fails. I get a pass to photograph this show, and the rules are simple: I can shoot their first four songs, but I can't use my flash. Fair enough. But from the opening strains of the band's first song, David Yow was doing his best Esther Williams impression through the first several rows of fans, where there was absolutely no light whatsoever. Oh well... That's what he's been doing for 18 years now. He's a wildman.
The show itself wasn't anything spectacular, but it was exactly what most of the crowd came to see - a good, old-fashioned Jesus Lizard ass kicking show, with a loyal horde of fans swarming and engulfing Yow for much of the night. Many didn't even seem to care about the band's somewhat muddy sound mix, or that Yow's lyrics were indecipherable once the guitar and bass kicked in.
The Lizard also deserves extra credit for bringing along two excellent opening bands. Japanese art-rockers, Ultra Bide, went over surprisingly well, while the heavier, more frenetic sounds of Stanford Prison Experiment had a more polarizing effect on the audience. Both were equally impressive.
