Jesus Lizard: (1994)

With vital works like " Pure ", " Head ", " Goat " and " Liar " the Jesus Lizard are one of the most respected and influential bands of our time. The new " Down " has ultimately improved the quality of their repertorior, having placed them between the all time classics of rock. For how much uproarious ostico and, the way they play is what best represents the tensions and contradictions of the early nineties, those to perhaps make noise with all the nerves hoping that the hardly passed second is the last one of the own life. Urlo (the not " song ") of placato Yow is a po' in the years, but the Jesus Lizard has remained substantially that urlo, even if today they are camouflaged in one splendid harmonic castle.

Having interviewed the group not too many times, this time we only talked with Duane Denison, the guitarist. A po' for to have been the last one to aggiungersi to the tribu' texas from which they had came from the Jesus Lizard, have one classic formation, a po' for being simply much timid one, Denison has always remained set apart to the inside of the group, and away from the public eye. In reality, it seems that the column carrying the sound is just the guitar of Denison, in the Jesus Lizard. In the beginning, if that seemed to us that it had only the function of the icing on the cake, today we recognize that without him in the group, the band would not have had a long life and (as what happened to Scratch Acid), and perhaps would not have gone beyond the first album. Thanks to its inventive spregiudicata one that every song seems completely different from the others. The disorientation that hits anyone that listens to a the Jesus Lizard record for the first time shows the drastically different way in which Denison faces every single song, like if in every song he is playing with a new complex, and continuously re-invents the style to the guitar.

How far has Down come?

Denison: " It seems to me that this is our better album, he is like compositions is like execution. Down is the first the Jesus Lizard disc that I can listen to it all in continuation. The previous ones were piu' that other of the pieces collections, everyone of which had to be enjoyed with calm, far away from the others. On Down I like practically all the songs. Only the next one is going to be better. "

Is there material that did not end up on the album?

" All the material for the next album exists practically. We have a dozen songs complete enough where they only lack the definitive titles. And the new songs are even better than those than Down ".

What songs on Down do you prefer?

" Destroy Before Reading, then also video. It's one of those where Sims has found a " groove " and then we refined it. I think that we had only written it one week before recording the album. This gives you an idea of the quality of the twelve that we have ready for the next album. It appeals to me in the way which it's constructed, with that initial figure that is repeated in various contexts, the way in which the guitar and the battery they are concatenati with, the sense of brano rock all of a breath... "

Of the previous albums, which give you memories of great pleasure?

" 7 vs 8 " (from " Head ") and " Gladiator " (from " Liar ").

Why did you name the album Down?

" Because the word " down " went in agreement with the cover that we had chosen. And because " down " is an ambiguous term in the USA, it means many things. It means that you have gotten depressed, but also that your tired, for various double meanings. "

Why do all of your albums have titles of one single word?

" They are words that appeal to the sound above all, to us. We entitle the albums from the sound, with those words. "

What do you say about the single " Fly On The Wall "?

" It has the strong lines of bottom and rimbombanti, the drone of guitar, a much driven in one, the means section seems the fragment of Chinese work, like nearly all cio' that it uses the pentatonic scale... a different song from the average, but one that lets you listen without difficulty, for which that is good "

Mistletoe?

" One day we asked Mac (the drummer) to play a time that was not standard, something different. And Mac came up with this strange beat in 13/8. I already had a riff for that song, but the riff did not work well in 13/8, thus the churches to add one beat, of becoming 14/8. The song born is from a pure technical fact, insomma ".

Queen For a Day?

" Someone said that it is similar to Judas Priest, but I have come to an agreement with Yow: he remembers the first ZZ Top. The important part is how it creates the atmosphere, the background, with that one stream of consciousness. The guitar solo is composed from two overlapped solos, one rock and one dissonante. From alive faro' one or the other to second of the day. "

Associate?

" It's the brand jazz and blues that we slip into all the albums. E' be recorded from the alive one, without manipulations or tests. The unavoidable step from film is when you play jazz in a rock context, all cio' that it recalls years INQUANTA ends in order to recall also those films. A brand of swing is also in " 50cc ", in which David Yow, sings like Mark Smith of the Fall . Also " American BB " is a shuffle in which the influence of the blues and jazz is showed very strongly. "

Horse?

" the Jesus Lizard plays with James Brown! "

Din?

" Sara' the piu' difficult to make from the alive one, because of the long pauses between the backs. One demands discreet concentration. "

Elegy?

" the " Pastoral " of 1994. In all of the discs we try to thread a reflexive song, which " Pastoral " exactly was.

My favorite one, Best Parts?

" We have constructed It putting with two songs, ciascuna di.le which in se' us It did not seem it was worth the pain of being recorded. You have reason, the really fast tremolo of one guitar carries out the role of the organ of Manzarek from the Doors. "

If you did not play in the Jesus Lizard, in which group you would want to play?

" the Miles David Quintet of 1972, a combo with Elvis Presley in 1958, Miles Davis Group in its last years, Led Zeppelin of 1970, Birthday Party, the Magazine... "

What can you tell us about the other members of the band ?

" Mac is the father of a family, happy , even if he becomes a brute when you put two sticks in hand. David Yow is an elf, a supernatural creature , ephemeral, than laureo' in " ebbrologia " (joke on one's word " ebbro "), and he is also married. With the exception of David Sims, a very organized person, from little exited from school. I am not married, my brother is crazy, my sister is a genius and I am a mix between the two. "

Who do you listen to today?

" A lot of jazz: Rheinhard, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, but also the new Sonic Youth, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. "
